Steel Tongue Drum

Root-mode packet for a 12 inch steel tongue drum prototype. The workbook gives first-pass geometry; the instrument is not tuned or build-ready until the real steel shell is cut, struck, trimmed, mounted, finished, and drift-checked.

Baseline

This explorer is a review surface for issue #5. It keeps the useful packet shape visible while separating workbook predictions, validator-clean docs, and coupon-proven CAM/CAD authority.

Body12 inround shell / vessel assumption from workbook.
Height6 inplanning shell height, not a measured blank.
Steel0.079 innominal thickness requiring real blank measurement.
Tongues11D3 bass plus upper tongues from the layout study.

Evidence Path

The risk is not whether the packet is tidy; it is whether slot geometry, heat/stress, and tuning behavior have been proven on real steel. These gates keep that line bright.

1

Material check

Record actual steel grade, thickness at multiple points, and forming or weld notes before trusting the workbook constant.

2

Kerf coupon

Cut a process coupon to capture kerf, taper, burrs, heat affected zone, warp, and slot-root radius before the full tongue field.

3

CAM/CAD decision

Record the coupon result in data/coupon-cam-cad-log.csv before promoting DXF, CAM compensation, or G-code authority.

4

First strike

Measure every tongue before trimming with the same support, mallet, strike point, microphone distance, and environment notes.

5

Tuning loop

Log cents error and trim history through rough-cut, deburr, tuning, final mount, finish cure, and 24-72 hour drift check.

Current Readiness

No measured prototype data is logged yet. Treat target notes and slot dimensions as planning values until `validation.csv` records measured Hz, cents error, support condition, finish state, and safety inspection results.

Authority Register

Planning Authority

steel-tongue-drum-design-table.xlsx, family-spec.csv, and validation.csv define the first prototype and measurement loop.

Missing For V5

No reviewed DXF, parametric CAD source, measured tuning log, coupon CAM/CAD evidence, MCP provenance log, or derived CAD render is present in this round.

Issue 5 Coupon Gate

cnc/coupon-first-cam-cad-gate.md and data/coupon-cam-cad-log.csv define the blocked promotion path from documentation to machine-ready authority.

Safety Boundary

Inside slot ends, burrs, sharp edges, heat affected zones, oil-can distortion, and support rattles remain inspection gates, not assumptions.

Visual Boundary

visual-output-register.csv records the layout SVG as a derived preview. It is not a cut-ready plate.
