# Tuning Notes

## Targets

The validated pitches are C3 through B3 chromatic. Secondary tongues are color
features and may be omitted if they reduce sustain or cause cross-talk.

## Tuning Direction

- Shorten effective tongue length to raise pitch.
- Remove small mass near the tongue tip to raise pitch.
- Add temporary mass near the tongue tip to lower pitch during experiments.
- Avoid grinding near the root because root stiffness changes unpredictably.

## Workflow

1. Leave each tongue about 8 mm long.
2. Measure raw pitch.
3. Trim in 1 mm steps while far from target.
4. Switch to filing/sanding near 30 cents sharp/flat.
5. Stop at target with the same mallet and support condition used for validation.
6. Retest after rack mounting.

## Cross-Talk

If adjacent boxes ring too strongly, try softer isolation strips, more rack
mass, or slightly different box spacing before changing tuned tongues.
