About the Siku

The siku (Aymara: siku') is a panpipe from the Andean Altiplano, with documented use among Aymara and Quechua peoples of Bolivia and Peru. Archaeological specimens found at Tiwanaku and Nazca sites date the instrument to at least 1500 BCE. It remains a living instrument in Aymara communities today.

What makes the siku distinctive is yanantin — the Aymara philosophy of complementary pairing. A siku is not played alone. The instrument is split into two interlocking ranks: arka (the leader, seven tubes) and ira (the follower, six tubes). Together they form a complete Mixolydian scale, but neither rank contains it alone. Two players interlock their notes in call-and-response, weaving a single melody from two halves. The music enacts a cultural value — a whole that neither part can express alone.

Build note: This is a contemporary workshop interpretation built from PVC pipe or bamboo using CNC-assisted frame fabrication. It is not a cultural artifact. See resources.md for ethnomusicological references and provenance guidance before publishing or captioning player photos.

Instrument Family

Four size classes follow the traditional Andean ensemble hierarchy — bass (Toyo), tenor (Zanka), alto (Malta), soprano (Chili). Each is a complete interlocking siku. The primary build target in this packet is the Zanka (key of C, bore ⌀0.625").

Zanka Tube Layout

The 13 Zanka tubes span G3–E5 in a Mixolydian scale. Arka rank (7 tubes) carries the odd-numbered positions; Ira rank (6 tubes) carries the even-numbered positions.

Formula: L_calc = 13552 / (4 × f_hz) − 0.82 × 0.625  ·  L_cut = L_calc + 3/16" trim allowance  ·  Stopped pipe; odd harmonics only.

Acoustics

The siku is a stopped cylindrical pipe: one end open (the blow end), one end closed (beeswax plug or natural bamboo node). Stopped pipes produce only odd harmonics — 1f, 3f, 5f — giving the siku its characteristic hollow, fundamental-rich timbre.

Build Workflow

1
Stock Preparation & Bore Verification
  • Measure bore ID and OD of all incoming stock with digital calipers
  • Record actuals in validation.csv (VAL-BORE rows)
  • Bamboo: if bore varies >0.015" along length, sort by bore class and adjust tube length per family-spec formula
  • PVC: verify nominal vs. actual bore (Sch40 nominal bore ≠ ID for all sizes)
2
Tube Cutting
  • Build story sticks (bamboo) or set digital stop (PVC) — see cnc/setup-sheet.md §6
  • Cut all 52 tubes at L_cut lengths from cut-list.csv
  • Label each tube immediately with tube ID and note name
  • ⚠ Chili Arka-7 (F#6, 1.982"): prototype first — see risks.md AC-04
3
Closed-End Sealing
  • Build 4 plywood sealing stands (one per member) — see cnc/setup-sheet.md §5
  • Stand tubes upright in stand; pour beeswax to 3/8" depth (Toyo/Zanka) or 1/4" depth (Malta/Chili)
  • Allow 30 min cure before handling
  • Bamboo alternative: natural node provides acoustic plug — no wax needed if node is solid and located within 1/4" of cut end
4
First Tuning Pass
  • Play each tube into a chromatic tuner; record Hz and cents deviation in validation.csv
  • Tubes should read flat (longer than needed) — expected 0–15 cents flat before trim
  • Mark tubes that read sharp (too short) — these are scrapped or repurposed to a higher-pitched member
  • Do not trim yet — all tubes must be measured first to establish baseline
5
Frame Rail Fabrication
  • Mill frame rails to width and thickness from cherry/walnut S4S stock
  • Route 13 tube pockets using CNC (preferred) or router table + index stops — see cnc/setup-sheet.md §1
  • Pocket width = tube OD − 0.005" (light interference); pocket depth = OD/3
  • Dry-fit all tubes before glue-up; confirm spacing and stepped profile
  • Finish rails with Danish oil before tube insertion
6
Assembly — Cord Binding
  • Seat tubes in frame rail pockets (no glue — cord binding holds the instrument)
  • Start cord wrap at the top rail, working toward the bottom rail
  • Waxed linen or nylon cord; minimum 3 wraps per tube; finish with square knot at rail end
  • Arka and Ira ranks built and bound separately
7
Final Tuning & Validation
  • Trim-tune all tubes to ±5 cents — see cnc/setup-sheet.md §7
  • Record final Hz and cents in validation.csv
  • Acceptance criterion: all 13 tubes within ±5 cents; no tube trimmed > 3/16" below L_calc
  • Play arka and ira together to verify interlocking scale and blend
8
Finishing
  • Lightly sand bamboo tube ends to 400 grit; wipe with tung oil (do not fill bore)
  • PVC tubes: sand to 400 then spray with matte acrylic clear (optional)
  • Cherry/walnut rail: second coat Danish oil; buff to satin finish
  • Photo documentation — see photo-shotlist.md
